In the late 1950s (insofar as can be determined) a small group of employees of the Coleraine Division of the then Electricity Board for Northern Ireland, took one Friday afternoon off to play a round of golf followed by a meal and a few bevies at Bushfoot Golf Club. They enjoyed their day out so much that they decided to make it a regular occurrence and in doing so the idea of forming a Golfing Society was nurtured.
Originally this Society was called the EBNI Golfing Society but changed its name to the Northern Ireland Electricity (Londonderry Area) Golfing Society following the restructuring of the electricity industry in Northern Ireland through privatisation in 1973.
In the formative years, the membership was confined to the EBNI employees and their families, but as time went by and with the membership dwindling, the rules were changed to allow none EBNI employees to join the Society as associate members. After two years Full Membership status was awarded to those who had demonstrated their commitment and engagement as Associate members.
Recently the Associate Membership category was removed and today all newcomers join as Full Members.Friendly competition with an element of fun was the remit for the early members, a tradition that has been successfully upheld from year to year.
If you would like to join, or to find out more about our Society, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
